The dependence of Atlantic Canadians on pensions, unemployment insurance and social assistance is falling according to recent Statistics Canada data.   Led by Nova Scotia, the dependency ratio in the region fell by 3.2% in 1997 compared to the previous year.  The economic dependency ratio compares the level of various types of government transfers with earned employment income.  This Report Card looks at the details behind the changes in these transfers and the implications on the region.
