The Economic Impact of the Nova Scotia Forest Industry

October 2, 2005

It is a tumultuous time for Nova Scotia’s forest industry as it is facing several immediate challenges, including rising energy costs, the strong Canadian dollar and slowing demand for some products.

Long-term issues also need to be addressed such as competition from low cost producers; aging machinery; management of the wood supply; and the implications of demographic trends for the supply of skilled labour.

The implications for the Nova Scotia economy are huge. The forest industry contributed an estimated $695 million to provincial GDP in 2004, employed approximately 11,00o people and exported over $1 billion worth of products internationally.
