Tourism in Atlantic Canada

February 1, 2002

February 2002
Tourism grew rapidly in Atlantic Canada during the latter half of the 1990s, with real out-of-province travel expenditures increasing at double the national rate. Yet data collected by individual provinces suggest that growth in the number of visitors has weakened during the last two years. Moreover, the terrorist attacks in the United Statesin September 2001 have raised concerns about the impact on air travel and on international travel in particular. This Report Card examines recent developments in the Atlantic tourism industry and highlights some challenges for the future.
