Federal Budget 2018: Highlights for Atlantic Canada

February 27, 2018

The Liberal government’s third budget projects that the federal deficit will peak at $19.4 billion in 2018/2019, tapering to $17 billion by 2020/2021, before declining to less than $14 billion in 2021/2022 and beyond. Lower program spending provides $3.6 billion in additional fiscal room in 2018/2019 in addition to $2 billion in planned infrastructure funding being delayed until the following two years. Similarly, over the next four fiscal years, savings from lower program spending are reinvested in new initiatives worth $2-3 billion annually, rather than being applied to deficit reduction.
