Atlantic Canada: Rising Employment but Earnings Still Lag

May 1, 2003

May 2003
Wages and salaries per capita grew at an average annual rate of 3.2% in the Atlantic provinces over the past decade. Much of this gain reflects the relatively strong job creation of the past six years that has spurred increased labour force participation. Despite these positive developments, East Coast wages and salaries per capita were still only 77% of the national average last year.  Moreover, recent data confirm a ten-year trend towards low-wage industries across Atlantic Canada. The evidence presented here reinforces the importance of an innovation-focused agenda for Atlantic Canada to support the growth of high-wage sectors.
