Atlantic Canada Needs More, Larger Exporters

October 4, 2017

Atlantic Canada has seen no overall growth in the number of exporters of goods since 2010, according to this Report Card from the Atlantic Provinces Economic Council (APEC). Between 2010 and 2016, the total number of exporters in New Brunswick and Newfoundland and Labrador fell. Only Prince Edward Island saw an increase above the 6% national growth rate; this was solely due to a 9% jump in the number of exporters in 2016.

Large exporters in Atlantic Canada – those employing more than 100 people – accounted for almost three-quarters of the region’s merchandise exports last year, even though they comprise 11% of exporting firms. Doubling the number of exporters that employ more than 100 people would increase total exports by 74%. Larger exporters are also more likely to be able to afford the costs of expanding into new markets.
