August 2004
The Atlantic fishing industry has changed dramatically since the cod crisis of the early 1990s. The shift from groundfish to shellfish has been accompanied by increased globalization, with larger imports for processing and exports diversifying to non-traditional markets. While the fish and fish processing sector accounts for a smaller share of regional output and employment that a decade ago, it remains a key part of the Atlantic Canada’s export and rural employment base. This Report Card documents some of the recent growth in the industry and some of the challenges it is facing.
