The latest APEC Report Card profiles Atlantic Canada’s manufacturing sector. It remains an important contributor to the region’s economy, accounting for more than 10% of GDP and 12% of employment when indirect impacts are included. However, Atlantic manufacturers have faced a challenging period over the last decade, with output and employment still well below 2004 levels. The decline in manufacturing has been more severe in the Atlantic provinces, due to the region’s greater dependence on two hard-hit industries – forest and seafood products. As manufacturers account for more than 60% of Atlantic Canada’s international export revenues their success in global markets remains critical.
