The Growing Role of Temporary Foreign Workers in Atlantic Canada

May 21, 2014

The number of temporary foreign workers in Atlantic Canada increased threefold between 2005 and 2012 to reach 10,900 workers in December 2012, representing 1% of total employment in the region, according to the latest APEC Report Card. The largest increases in the number of temporary foreign workers have been in lower paying, lower skill occupations such as fish plant and food service workers. Recent and proposed changes to the temporary foreign worker program will make it more difficult for some Atlantic businesses to use the program.
