Atlantic Canada is experiencing a high level of major project investment activity. Project developers have expressed concerns about their ability to find an adequate supply of labour to meet their needs for these projects. At the same time, training institutions are keen to ensure they can provide an adequate supply of newly trained graduates in appropriate fields. Governments also want to better understand the labour market challenges of major project activity to maximize the economic benefits for their jurisdictions and to help shape their labour market policies, including apprenticeship training and immigration programs.
This report presents APEC’s forecast and analysis of major project investment in Atlantic Canada, focusing on estimates of the regional labour requirements for these projects for 50 occupations that are critical to the construction phase of major projects. The report also discusses some of the key trends affecting the supply of labour for these occupations.
