Federal Budget 2005: Highlights for Atlantic Canada

February 23, 2005

Finance Minister Ralph Goodale’s second budget shows the implications of being in a minority government: tax cuts and defence spending to appease the Conservative party, spending on the environment, child care and other social programs to shore up support on the left. Of the almost $49 billion over six years identified for new budget measures, almost $13 billion represents tax cuts, including reductions in personal tax, increases in RRSP contribution limits and reductions in corporate income tax. This Commentary highlights other budget measures relevant to Atlantic Canada, including the expenditure review, environmentally sustainable infrastructure funding in cities, defence spending and others.
