Major Investment Projects Key to Sustaining Atlantic Construction Sector

December 17, 2008

Atlantic Canada’s construction sector has grown substantially in recent years, but may have peaked for now, with next year's housing starts in the region expected to fall to their lowest level since 2001. The economic downturn is causing companies to cut back on investment spending with the credit crisis delaying some major investment projects. But several existing projects continue to ramp up and governments are looking to increase infrastructure spending, though labour market capacity remains a key concern. This Report Card discusses the current state of the construction sector in Atlantic Canada, the effects of the recent economic turmoil and labour market changes that are expected on the horizon.
