Recent Trends in Atlantic Canada's Labour Markets

Overall employment in Atlantic Canada has grown by more than 23,000 between 2004 and 2007. Gains in construction and domestic service industries have outnumbered job losses in export-focused sectors such as manufacturing and related primary industries, tourism and transportation. While specific communities have been hard hit by plant closures, overall unemployment rates in the Atlantic provinces continue to fall. Indeed, with limited current and projected growth in the region’s labour force, labour supply concerns are becoming increasingly prevalent.
 
This Report Card examines the impact of economic restructuring on Atlantic Canada’s labour market performance, highlighting shifts in industry composition and the urban-rural dimension.
