Atlantic Canada’s independent voice on economic issues

Deep Dive: Seafood Processing

This report is one of three deep dives on select industries in the Atlantic region in our Finding Talent series. These sectors have been chosen for some of their unique characteristics.

The seafood processing industry is an example of a highly seasonal, relatively low-wage industry that usually requires minimal education and training. A majority of operations are located in rural areas and a large proportion of workers are 55 years and above. Seafood manufacturing is the largest component of manufacturing at 21% of employment. The potential solutions for seafood manufacturing are likely to differ significantly with other segments of manufacturing.
