Increases in the minimum wage, toward $15/hour in Ontario and Alberta, are stirring debate about the right level and the impacts of minimum wages. While the Atlantic provinces have some of the lowest minimum wage rates in Canada, they have some of the highest minimum wages relative to overall earnings in the economy. What is the right way to set minimum wages, and how important are overall wage levels and the structure of the economy for this discussion? Do they matter, when less than 7% of Atlantic employees receive the minimum wage?
