Economic Impacts of COVID-19 on Atlantic Retail Sales

Date: March 27, 2020

  • Retail sales are down in the majority of stores but some, such as grocery stores and pharmacies, are receiving a temporary boost in sales. Online sales have likely increased.
  • Many stores in the Atlantic region have closed. Those that remain open are seeing less foot traffic than usual as many consumers stay home.
  • Grocery stores (e.g., Sobeys, Superstore) remain open but are exercising social distancing precautions.
  • Retail sales will also be impacted by lower business travel and tourism and delay of cruise season until at least July 1.
