APEC Welcomes New Governors to the Board at its Annual General Meeting

Highlights opportunities for enhanced prosperity through launch of APEC Forum on Competitiveness
APEC Chair, Jay Forbes, President and CEO of Aliant Inc., extended a warm welcome to new APEC Governors appointed at the APEC Annual General Meeting on June 22, 2006 in St. John’s, NL.
He acknowledged the expertise and support of the Board of Governors as APEC continued to move forward on issues related to economic prosperity in the region. “APEC enjoyed another successful year with many accomplishments to its credit, the most notable being the bringing together of key public and private stakeholders in launching the APEC Forum on Competitiveness.” The Forum is a five-year research and policy reform initiative designed to build a more competitive economy and set a clear path for improved prosperity for the region and individual Atlantic Canadians.
Mr. Forbes is APEC’s outgoing Chair, while incoming Chair is Karl Smith, President and CEO, Newfoundland Power Inc., in St. John’s, NL. Mr. Smith said he looks forward to working with an engaged and committed Board representing key sectors and jurisdictions across the region. “APEC will benefit from the significant expertise and strong regional voice our Governors offer as we advance issues key to Atlantic Canada’s economic competitiveness.”

Mr. Forbes also recognized the valuable contribution of Governors who have completed their term, including: Tom Brennan, Vice-President, Commercial Banking, Atlantic Canada, Bank of Nova Scotia; Bill Fleming, Vice-President, East Coast, Petro-Canada; Allan Shaw, Chairman, The Shaw Group; and Dorothy Spence, President, D. Spence Consulting.
Looking ahead to the upcoming year, Mr. Smith pointed to the leadership of APEC President and CEO Elizabeth Beale in guiding a skilled team on many initiatives, including the Forum on Competitiveness. Over the five-year horizon of the Forum, four key objectives will be addressed, namely: strengthening innovation capacity and commercialization outcomes, reducing barriers to inter-provincial trade, improving the investment climate and meeting human resource challenges in the region.
Launch events for the Forum were held last week in each province across the Atlantic region. These involved representatives from Forum partner organizations, including: Industry Canada; the four provincial government economic development departments in the region; and private sector partners including Aliant, Fortis, Emera, Scotiabank and McCain Foods.
